Course programme
Find out how creative practices can be combined to work with social engagement, participation, learning and education programmes in museums, galleries and cultural organisations. Using case studies of past and current social engagement projects, you will learn how to analyse what constitutes a successful project, as well as understanding the finer details of project proposals, budgeting, funding streams and evaluation processes.
Through discussion, collaborative group work and practical exercises this course will inspire and motivate you to begin programming, curating, devising and facilitating social engagement projects or concepts of your own. Using active learning techniques, we will visit cultural organisations and see how social engagement is taking place in a live way, developing a critical framework that participants can use in the future. We will explore the ethics around social engagement, and how they operate within a wider social context, helping us to evaluate the wider impact of social engagement initiatives.
Course Outcomes
You will have developed a greater understanding of social engagement, through researching and critiquing, but will also know how to create a structure for future projects of your own. You will also have a finalised project proposal, with a strategy on how to approach museums, galleries and cultural organisations. Over the week you will develop your own personal manifesto for how you will use your practice, and how that will drive your social engagement plan forward. Your tutor will also work closely with you to create a bespoke action plan on how you can take your ideas forward.
Who Should Attend
This course is ideal for those who are interested in curating, but also creatives (at any stage in their career) considering entering this realm, but are unsure where to start. The perfect opportunity to gain confidence in programming, curating, devising and facilitating social engagement projects or concepts.
