About this course
You’ll cover theory, critical thinking and skills development as well as gaining practical experience. Throughout the modules you’ll analyse debates in and about culture and the arts. You’ll apply this analysis to contemporary practice, structures, funding and participation.
Culture, the arts and the creative industries in the UK are estimated to be worth around £36 billion to our economy.
Careers in arts management are varied and cover every cultural and artistic area. They include roles in:
Events and venue management
Programming events and seasons
Audience development
Community engagement and social inclusion
Education and learning
Managing artists and performers
Competition for jobs is fierce and not everyone will want a career in the ‘arts’. The course includes a range of generic skills and opportunities that are aimed at increasing employability for our postgraduates in the voluntary sector, social enterprises, fundraising, and a wide range of administrative and management roles.
Applicants will normally have a good first degree (2.1 or above) in any academic subject. Applicants without a first degree may be considered if they can demonstrate considerable relevant experience; they may be asked to attend an interview.
If English is not your first language then you will need to provide evidence of proficiency in written and spoken English.

Course programme
· Trimester 1
We’ll introduce key developments in arts management. You’ll explore the varied skills and knowledge required in managing the arts, and consider arts management’s wider economic, political and social contexts.
You’ll also gain a grounding in management in general, providing a springboard to management topics which are studied throughout the course.
· Trimester 2
In your second trimester you’ll complete a short placement. This should enable you to produce a meaningful piece of work for your host; your placement portfolio should reflect your experience of working with your host organisation and the wider context in which that work takes place.
In addition, you’ll consider approaches to research and complete a short piece of independent research. We’ll ask you to look beneath the surface of a specific performance, historic house interior, a restored garden, a new gallery, a website, a temporary exhibition, or a combination of these, and to consider: why this?
· Trimester 3
You may extend your placement into your third trimester, as the basis for your final project, or take a second placement at a different organisation. Alternatively, you can choose to do a more traditional dissertation in the third trimester: this might be particularly attractive if you’re considering doing further research.
