What will I study?

  • SINGLE AWARD is made up of 3 AS units. You will be taught by one teacher for 5 lessons each week. In the upper 6th you may then complete another 3 units to gain a single A level.
  • DOUBLE AWARD is made up of 6 AS units. You will be taught by two teachers for 10 lessons each week. In the Upper Sixth you are able to complete another 6 units to gain two A levels. Single Award qualifications are graded A-E. Double Award qualifications are graded on a nine grade scale: AA, AB, BB, BC, CC, CD, DD, DE, and EE.

You will learn about the needs of a range of clients and the skills and qualities needed by health, social care and early years professionals. Topics include: Effective caring skills, Developing effective communication skills for care-work, Health, illness and disease, Nutrition and dietetics, Elderly adults and people with disabilities, Working in health and social care, Mental disorder, Human development, Research techniques.

What should I study alongside Health and Social Care?
Past experience tells us that Biology, Psychology, Sociology are the most popular companion courses. If you are considering teaching as a career you need to study a National Curriculum subject, such as English, IT or Biology.
You will learn through a variety of different teaching and learning methods. There will be some group work and role-play activities as well as individual assignments. Case studies will be used to place the learning in a meaningful context. Throughout year one of the course you should try to undertake a work placement, enabling you to put classroom knowledge into practice and develop your caring skills.

How is this course assessed?

50% coursework and 50% examinations. Each unit lasts approximately 11 weeks. You will be expected to meet internally set deadline dates for your coursework which will be externally moderated in June.

What next?

Suitable for vocationally orientated students wishing to pursue a career in any of the health, social care or early years professions. The course is particularly relevant for those planning to enter nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, teaching, social work or jobs allied to medicine.
