About this course

Candidates must have at least a grade C in GCSE Mathematics and English Language, in addition to normal A level college entry requirements. There is a strong focus on numeracy in A level Business Studies. Quality of language is also assessed as an integral part of the A level.

Course Content:
AS Course Content:

The AS year consists of 2 units:

UNIT 1 - planning and financing a business
UNIT 2 - managing a business

Unit 1 Topics include:

- Starting a Business - The challenges and issues of starting a business; enterprise; entrepreneurs.
- Financial Planning - Key financial concepts needed to start a business including: sources of start up finance, planning cash flow, contribution and break even.

Unit 1 assessment:

Written Paper:
1 hour 15 mins (60 marks)

Weighting:
40% of total AS marks/ 20% of total A Level marks

Short answer questions and extended responses based on a mini case study.

Unit 2 Topics include:
- People - Communication; motivation; recruitment; HR planning.
- Operations Management - adding value; quality; customer service;
- Finance - improving cash flow, measuring profit, improving profitability.
- Marketing and Competition - planning; 4 'P's; analysing the competitive environment.

Unit 2 assessment:

Written Paper:
1 hour 30 minutes (80 marks)

Weighting:
60% of total AS marks / 30% of the total A Level marks

2 compulsory, multi-part data response questions.
A2 Course Content:
The A2 course consists of 2 units:
UNIT 3 - Strategies for success
UNIT 4 - The business environment and change

Unit 3 topics include:

- Financial Strategies and Accounts - financial information, measuring performance, financial decisions
- Marketing Strategies - analysing markets, devising marketing strategies.
- Operations Strategies - location, R & D, improving operational efficiency
- Human Resource Strategies - workforce planning, measuring performance, adapting organisational structures, employee relations.

Unit 3 Assessment:

Written Paper:
1 hour 45 minutes (80 marks)

Weighting:
25% of total A Level marks

Teaching Learning Methods:
Teaching methods are varied and range from the more traditional style teaching of the skills necessary for the first of the modular exams, to a more interactive style of learning. Subject specific data is continually related to topics in contemporary media, and students are encouraged to draw upon this, and their own experience in class discussion and examination questions. Where possible, guest speakers are invited to the college, in order that the knowledge gained from the syllabus is put into a practical context.

Skills & Commitment:
We expect:

- 100% punctual attendance at all lessons.
- Students to do a minimum of 5 hours homework per week.
- Students to demonstrate an ability to carry out calculations, interpret and analyse data, apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations, develop arguments and make judgements and decisions
- Students to keep up to date with current business affairs by watching the news daily or by reading a quality newspaper.
- Students to always bring the right equipment to College including calculator, book, paper and pens.
- Students to be genuinely interested in the business world and to be able to make informed comments during classroom discussions or debates.
- Students to always meet homework deadlines and to produce well researched and well thought out work.
- Students must have a college locker to store textbooks securely, and in order that they have them available for use every time they are required.

Cost:
Students will from time to time be offered the opportunity to attend conferences specifically designed for A Level candidates. These are usually about £10 - 12 each; it is likely that a student will attend one or possibly two per year of the course. You will be expected to provide your own paper, pens, files etc, but not textbooks.

Progression:
An A Level in Business Studies is highly valued by both employers and higher education institutions. It can provide a number of career opportunities.

Students who complete this course successfully could progress on to many courses in higher education including:

Degrees in Business Studies, Finance, Marketing, Management including Retail Management, Economics, Economics and Politics, Economics and Computing, Economics and Social History to name but a few. Students could also apply for Higher National Diplomas or Certificates.

In terms of employment, this course will be appropriate for many different careers including Finance, Accountancy, Marketing, Banking, Management, Insurance, Law, Stock Broking and the Civil Service.
