Will I enjoy Mathematics?
Students who have enjoyed the challenge of GCSE Mathematics may be now ready to take on the subject at AS/A Level. Mathematics is a progressive subject in which students continually build upon the skills they have developed in previous lessons.
What will I study on the course?
In the first year you'll study:
· Decision 1: Decision Maths will be new to almost all students and it looks at the application of mathematics to real life situations. This may be the problem of finding the shortest route between two towns or the most efficient route for a postman to deliver letters on a housing estate.
· Core 1 and Core 2: The two core units develop further the skills learned at GCSE and contain topics such as algebra, functions, geometry, and sequences as well as new topics such as differentiation and integration.
In the second year students will study three more units, Core 3 and Core 4, in addition to a choice of either Statistics 1 or Mechanics 1.
Progression
All potential employers will recognise the problem solving skills that students with a Maths qualification will undoubtedly have. For many careers, particularly in the fields of science and engineering an A Level in Mathematics is essential. It is also considered very advantageous in careers such as medicine dentistry, finance and insurance.
