Course programme

Course Content Units you will study
  • Year 1

In Year 1 you will study both subjects equally. The core units in education studies explore the nature of education, learning theories, and the ways in which learning can be supported. In mathematics you will be introduced to fundamental mathematical topics needed for later study and you will study linear algebra and programming which includes an introduction to MATLAB, the mathematical software package.

  • Year 2

In Year 2 you can continue with equal study or choose a major/minor route and so the units you will study depend on the route you have chosen. In education studies you will consider how teachers teach and how educational policy impacts on the professional in the classroom. Units currently include policy, practice and the professional, and researching educational issues; option units cover inclusion, diversity and special education needs, and working with children and young people . Studies in mathematics currently include numerical and mathematical methods, mathematical modelling, and the mathematics of graphics and virtual environments.

  • Year 3

In your final year you can continue with an equal study or major/minor route. A further option in the final year is named route study. If you have chosen a major/minor route in Year 2, then you could choose to focus solely on your major subject in your final year, leading to a BA (Hons) Economics or BSc (Hons) Mathematics degree.

Studies in economics currently include business and financial forecasting, econometrics, economics of growth and development, economics of money and banking, economics of the European Monetary Union, international business and global change, and international economics. In mathematics you can choose from a range of option units covering topics including digital communications and sound processing, group theory, computational methods in ordinary and partial differential equations and dynamical systems and chaos. You will also complete a final year project or dissertation. If you take equal study you can choose to do this unit in either economics or mathematics. If you are taking a major or named route, this unit will come from the relevant subject.
