AS / A2 Philosophy

WHY TAKE PHILOSOPHY?
Have you ever thought about why you believe what you believe? Whether what you see and hear is real? Why you should do what you are told and obey the law? Whether killing another human being can ever be acceptable? If God exists, where is he, and how can you prove his existence to a non-believer? Whether you are really free to live your life as you please, or are merely following a path that is set for you?

These are the kinds of questions that are considered in the study of Philosophy at both AS and A2 level, and you will come into contact with a range of challenging and stimulating ideas. The course is a good accompaniment to both humanities and science subjects, as it considers questions that are relevant to all. It combines particularly well with History and English Literature and is an ideal subject for those wishing to pursue an academic subject at degree level.

WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
The AS concentrates on a number of key philosophical themes, intended to provide students with a broad introduction to philosophy. At A2, students will specialise further, selecting two themes to study in depth and focusing on philosophical problems through the study of a key text.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
You will need to have strong written and spoken communication skills, as much of the course will require discussion of difficult ideas. As assessment is by extended written response you will require good essay writing skills, as well as the ability to read often long and challenging pieces of text. You will develop your knowledge of the most profound areas of human thought, as well as your abilities to discuss complex ideas in both verbal and written formats.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
You will be assessed by two examinations, one taken in January and one in the summer for both AS and A2.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
Philosophy is a well regarded subject that will support university applications. There will be opportunities for you to take part in a full range of study visits, often with students from other subjects such as English, Sociology and Religious Studies.
