Entry Requirements

You need have occupational competence in the area you wish to assess. This is usually demonstrated through holding a qualification at level 3 or above in the area of work you wish to assess.
You will normally need access to at least two candidates to complete assessment practice in order to gain the qualification. You will need to be working with another assessor who can countersign your decisions.
If you are new to assessing or hope to become an assessor but are not yet able to carry out real assessments you are able to complete the underpinning knowledge and understanding unit, Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment on its own and will not need access to candidates to assess.

Course programme

Summary

The City and Guilds qualification scheme offers qualifications to train assessors and those carrying out quality assurance of those assessments (internal verifiers). They replace the City and Guilds A1/A2 awards.

QCF (NVQ) assessors support and assess people working towards qualifications in settings like colleges, training centres and the workplace. This suite of qualifications offers various routes depending on the type of assessments you will be doing, for example in the workplace, in a college or both.

Each of the qualification routes includes the knowledge and understanding unit, Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment. This unit can be done as a standalone award if you are new to assessing or hope to become an assessor but are not yet able to carry out real assessments.

Depending on the type of assessment you will be doing you can choose from the following qualification routes:

  • Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment – for assessing occupational competence in the workplace. This will involve the study of 2 units.
  • Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement – for assessing vocational skills and knowledge outside the workplace, for example in classrooms or workshops. This will involve the study of 2 units.
  • Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement – for assessing both occupational competence in the workplace, and skills, knowledge and understanding outside the workplace. This will involve the study of 3 units.
