Our Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism covers the aspects of autism and gives you an understanding of the complex and diverse condition that autism is, enabling participants to begin to empathise and start to consider how to adapt their practice with useful strategies. Autism refers to a whole range of social, language and communication problems. Severity ranges from mild and often undiagnosed to severe, where it is almost impossible for people to successfully engage in society.

The NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism has been accredited by the qualifications regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and is part of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

About this course

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder. People living with an autism spectrum disorder will experience challenges with communication and social interactions and will display restrictive and repetitive behaviour. Autism is not always immediately apparent and the symptoms can be more severe for some than others.

This qualification by NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism allows learners to gain an understanding of the different spectrum of autistic conditions and how they can affect people in a variety of ways, as well as explore the importance of using a person-centred approach to provide support.

This Autism Awareness Level 2 RQF Course will give you an understanding of the different spectrum of autistic conditions and how they can affect people in a variety of ways, as well as explore the importance of using a person-centred approach to provide support.

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification.

At the end of this course, successful learners will receive the following qualification: NCFE CACHE Autism Awareness Level 2 RQF.

That means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Unit 1: Introduction to autism

This unit provides learners with an introduction to autism, covering what is meant by ‘autism’, theories and diagnosis. Learners will also look at common misconceptions associated with autism and conditions that can co-occur with autism.

Unit 2: Using a person-centred approach to support individuals with autism

This unit covers using a person-centred approach to support individuals with autism, incorporating the preferences and needs of the individual. Learners will also look at legislation and guidance, and the support networks available to individuals and their families.

Unit 3: Communication and social interaction in individuals with autism

This unit covers the potential delays and difficulties in speech, language, and social development sometimes faced by individuals with autism. It also covers methods and strategies that could be used when communicating with an individual with autism.

Unit 4: Sensory processing, perception and cognition in individuals with autism

In this unit learner's will gain an understanding of sensory processing, perception, and cognition in individuals with autism - including looking at hypersensitivity and hypo-sensitivity. Learners will also consider how to the support the sensory needs of individuals with autism.

Unit 5: Supporting positive behaviour in individuals with autism

Through this unit learners will understand individuals’ behaviours in the context of autism. They’ll also look at how to support positive behaviour and help individuals to develop coping strategies.

Unit 6: Supporting individuals with autism to live healthy and fulfilled lives

This unit covers how to support individuals through transitions and life events, how to maintain their personal safety, and how to access services, facilities and employment opportunities. Learners will also gain an understanding of what it’s like for an individual to live with autism.

Assessment

Each unit is followed by a written tutor marked assignment (TMA), which is submitted and then marked by your tutor. You will not be required to take an external exam.
