This course is ideal for teachers and trainers who have current or recent experience in delivering vocational learning, either in a college environment or workplace training. You will gain further understanding of how adults learn, how to design and deliver inclusive learning and how to support the progress of your learners. You will also explore, practice and reflect on the skills you will gain on the course. You cannot enrol directly for this course. About this course
• Reflect on your roles and responsibilities as a teacher/trainer in relation to the teaching and learning cycle
• Apply appropriate strategies to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment
• Plan and deliver sessions in which you will:
* use appropriate teaching methods and resources that support active learning
* promote Equality and Diversity and British values
* embed English, Maths, employability, digital and wider skills
• Apply a range of methods to assess learning and give constructive feedback
• Reflect on your practice, using peer and tutor feedback to continously improve your practical skills
• Plan and deliver a successful microteaching session in which you demonstrate delivery of impactful and inclusive learning
To gain the qualification, you will need to:
• Attend 80% of the course (we strongly recommend 100% attendance, especially on our blended courses)
• Engage with our online resources between sessions, as directed by your trainer, and complete a series of reflective activities
• Successfully complete written assessmentsand
• Plan and deliver a successful microteaching session
• Evaluate your microteaching session based on peer and utor feedback
• Observe an experienced teacher in your subject area and evaluate their practice.
We will supply appropriate online learning material and task sheets in the classroom, as required.
The recommended text book is: Gravells, A (2014) The Award in Education and Training - Further Education and Skills. (Revised edn) Learning Matters Limited. Our library has a range of books and e-books and journals to support your study. We also recommend that you bring your own devices (eg. laptop, tablet, etc) to the classroom sessions for the purpose of supporting your learning (free wifi access is available).
This programme is designed for supporting self-study, using online resources and activities. There are 6 classroom-based sessions that you are required to attend. We recommend a buddy system, as peer learning is known to be most effective in supporting learning.
In the classroom your trainer will model effective teaching practice. Your learning will be facilitated through:
• Participating in large and small group activities, eg. brainstorm, discussion, presentation and other active
learning tasks
• Receiving direct instruction from your trainer
• Participating in simulated teaching
You are required to participate in all activities; this is an opportunity for you to develop as a teacher/trainer through experiential learning and becoming a reflective practitioner.
For independent study you will be expected to:
• Access resources from Google Classroom, our online learning platform, and use them to develop your knowledge and understanding of effective teaching and learning
• Organise your study and manage your time efficiently
• Submit draft assignments to given deadlines
• Set targets and review your individual learning plan throughout the programme. Actual classroom attendance: 26 and 27 January 2019; 16 and 17 March 2019; 13 and 14 April 2019.

The course includes topics related to your roles and responsibilities, linked to the four stages of the teaching/training cycle:
Stage 1: Identifying needs - understanding how adults learn, their barriers and motivations
Stage 2: Designing and planning learning - understanding ways to structure active and inclusive learning
Stage 3: Delivering learning - understanding and applying methods that support impactful learning
Stage 4: Assessing and evaluating learning - understanding how to check and record learning and progress and evaluate effectiveness in achieving outcomes for learners.
