This interdisciplinary programme will enable you to explore, develop and enhance your knowledge and understanding of issues that impact on children and young peoples lives. You will study the nature of childhood and youth in contemporary society, drawing on relevant social scientific theory and research, and on current policy and practice developments. You will be able to engage in key debates concerning children and young people, such as child health, wellbeing and development; protection of vulnerable children and young people; youth identities, cultures and transitions; and childrens rights in local and global contexts.

Course Content

he programme draws upon relevant theory and research in psychology, sociology, philosophy, social policy, and health and educational studies to engage with current issues and debates concerning children and young people.You will study key concepts and debates in social science in relation to childhood and youth. This includes the study of key aspects of children’s psychological development, and the acquisition of language and intelligence; societal influences on children and young people; policy as it relates to childhood and youth; health and well-being in childhood and youth; and related ethical and moral issues. You study how to conduct your own research and inquiry in the subject area. As you progress through the programme, you will have the opportunity to specialise in childhood and youth related topics of your choosing.

Combining two subjects at degree level

The Combined Honours programme offers you an opportunity to study two subjects at degree level, enabling you to benefit from high quality teaching across a diverse range of courses.

Units you will study
  • Year 1

    In Year 1 you will study both of your combined honours subjects equally. You will take units in Health and Wellbeong, Children and Young People and Constructing Childhood and Youth.

  • Year 3

    In Year 3 you may continue with an equal study or a major/minor route. If you choose to major in this subject you will undertake a dissertation on Childhood and Youth.
