Why should I study GCSE Mathematics at Cardinal Newman? The importance of obtaining a qualification in Mathematics cannot be stressed enough. It is for that reason that all students in their first year at Cardinal Newman, who have not achieved grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics, are encouraged to follow either a GCSE or Numeracy course.

GCSE Mathematics
The GCSE course offered by Cardinal Newman College follows the national curriculum for Mathematics and will therefore be familiar to many students. The course runs over one full year (i.e. it is designed to start in September and run through until the following summer). The Edexcel specification is followed allowing students the chance to gain a pass at GCSE.
Numeracy
This is a well respected course which is welcomed by many employers. It provides an opportunity for students; for whom GCSE Mathematics is not appropriate; to obtain a nationally recognised qualification in Mathematics. There are three levels for this Numeracy course. Individuals study at the level most suited to their current level of numerical skills.

Decisions about the most appropriate level are made by subject specialists once a student has been enrolled onto the course. It is possible for a student to move from one level to another as progress dictates. Progression to GCSE in the following year is possible for successful students.
