Course programme

Course Content

This is a one-year course. The modules enable you to explore key aspects of early childhood education and care, and will prepare you well if you wish to progress to postgraduate study.

Study modules

You will study eight modules on the course. Below are examples of modules available. Specific modules vary according to the Centre where you are studying.

As our courses are reviewed regularly, the module list you choose from may vary from that shown below.Research Methods in Childhood and EducationYou will familiarise yourself with various research tools (interviewing, observation, questionnaires etc.) and appropriate data analysis. A key focus will be to consider the particular complexities of research that arise when the participants are children and/or infants. You will explore the practical and ethical issues of conducting research with children from both a psychological and sociological perspective.

Equality and Identity

The aim of this module is to provide you with a greater understanding of the formation of a child's self-identity in the light of issues associated with advantage or disadvantage in the wider society. You will consider the impact of self-identity on personal learning strategies, and how these can be included in quality planning, implementation and assessment.

Reflective Practice

This module builds on your previous work-related learning and aims to further enhance your confidence and competence in working as an early years practitioner in a range of early years settings. You will explore your practical observations and actions within the context of relevant policy, and theoretical understandings of child development and learning. The focus of your work for this module will be negotiated between you and your tutor.

Dissertation

The dissertation considers an issue, negotiated between the student and module leader/supervisor, which generally arises from aspects of Level 5 and 6 work in Early Childhood Studies. The dissertation encourages you to see yourself as an independent thinker and writer. Regular one-to-one or small group meetings allow you to present your ideas and to be guided by your supervisor towards the production of a thoughtful piece of work that draws on theoretical perspectives and ‘real world’ research that you have undertaken yourself.

Field trips

We are always keen to explore ways in which you broaden your experience of education and development. In the past we have visited The Gambia developing long standing relationships with schools and colleges and we are actively exploring international opportunities in other parts of the world, aiming to be responsive to students' needs and interests. Students on the Early Childhood Studies BA (top up) course are very welcome to apply for places on these trips.

Please note: the cost of an optional field trip is not included in your course fee, and a separate fee will apply.
