About the BA Counselling Studies programme
Whether paid or unpaid, the need for trained counsellors continues to rise. However increasingly, workers within voluntary, private, statutory and other welfare organisations are required to have a 'duality' in their skill base in terms of a primary and secondary counselling role. This up-to-the-minute programme responds to those demands.You will undertake a combination of academic and experiential learning, which are considered essential attributes for an effective counsellor.
The programme also provides a route through which students have the opportunity to gain British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy accreditation with additional criteria upon completion.

Entry requirements For 2017 entry onwards: applicants require 80 points at A Level, Level 3 Certificate in Counselling, GNVQ or an Access to HE Diploma. Students who lack formal qualifications will be interviewed and undertake an entrance assessment. Additionally any student wishing to enter the programme directly onto Year 2 (Level 5) must have successfully achieved a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling and completed a bridging unit. All students must be a minimum of 18 years old at the point of entry. What you will learn Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Level 4 provides an introductory year where students have the opportunity to become familiar with a mix of counselling skills and practice, theory and personal development. Introduction to Counselling concentrates on the theory underpinning working in the person-centred approach. Students will apply the theory to their own skills practice in Core Skills 1 and 2. There will be the opportunity to learn and begin to understand yourself through personal development. You will consider the practical aspects of counselling including confidentiality and records. Study skills and research are further incorporated within Lifespan Development module. What Next MA Counselling. Teaching in the post-16 sector (with further training). Programme Benefits Upon successful completion of this degree, graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to pursue a new career, or advance an existing one that requires them to be able to explore their client's feelings and emotions that are often related to an individual's life experiences. Counsellors often work within a confidential setting which requires them to be able to listen to their clients and offer them time, empathy and respect in order for them to be able to understand themselves from a different perspective. They can often be found working in educational settings including schools, colleges and universities; children's centres and youth agencies; specialised telephone help lines; churches and religious organisations; health care settings such as GP centres, hospitals and mental health settings; and statutory & often set up their own private practice. Learning & Teaching Methods Methods of learning and teaching are designed to support students in becoming active members of a learning community. Students will be expected to work together in an informal environment as well as in formal classes where a culture of dignity, courtesy and mutual respect with staff and their peers is essential. A variety of methods will be used such as lectures, interactive lectures, seminars, workshops, group work and peer support.
