  • It's been so good so far, I have a have learned so much and grown as a person. All the facilities at Coventry University are excellent and up to the requirements of modern educational system. As an international student I never thought I would find it the transition easy but I've grown to love my course and have a passion for my future. There are employment fairs quite often and for law specifically we have a third module each semester that tends to focus on transferable skills. Each faculty has an employment tutor as I've gathered. Lectures are very helpful and friendly providing guidance and assistance whenever needed or requested. The students union is pretty alright and takes steps to always keep us informed and interested in activities taking place around the university. The University’s facilities are at quite a very good standard.

This course runs in 2016/17.

Social Work plays an important role in protecting children, young people and adults from harm and in supporting the needs of vulnerable people in society. This course is designed to provide you with the skills you need to become a social worker.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This course is designed to respond to the intellectual, educational and contemporary challenges presented by rapidly changing patterns of social work provision. The course is grounded in practice and research activities and draws on a range of relevant academic disciplines.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • a course of study which is accredited by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC);
  • excellent and long established links with Warwickshire County Council, Coventry City Council and Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and numerous voluntary and independent sector agencies in the area;
  • excellent community links with service users and carers which are integrated into all aspects of the course;
  • high quality supervised practice placement experiences in a range of social care settings where you can learn alongside experienced practitioners;
  • a course teaching team made up of staff with international social work experience, teaching qualifications and social work qualifications who have also published research on social work ethics and values, children and welfare inequalities, global comparative perspectives on social work practice, international social work, student identity and globalisation, educational attainment and service user empowerment.

Accreditation

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course is grounded in practice, drawing on a range of relevant academic disciplines and providing inter-agency, inter-professional and international perspectives. While the primary aim of the curriculum is to develop professional competence, the course aims to place this understanding in a wider social and political context.

The core course themes are law, social justice and social policy, safeguarding vulnerable people, research, assessment, planning and intervention, social work practice with children and adults, applied psychology, sociology, ethics and philosophy, diversity, theory and methodology, skills development and critical reflection.

In year one and two you will study these core themes and then in years two and three you will start putting them into practice in placements with a range of different social work providers. In year three you will also study the organisational context of social work and international perspectives and you will undertake an independent research project.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Our course is taught using lectures, workshops, seminars, group work, student presentations, skills workshops, guest speakers, one to one and professional development group tutorials. In addition to this you will also undertake study skills days and two practice placements and will be assigned a personal tutor who will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 5%; coursework, tests, essays 55%; other e.g. placements etc. 40%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical teaching week you will have up to 14 contact hours of study and this breaks down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of tutorial (or, later, individual project supervision) every 2 weeks

Medium group teaching: 4 hours of practical, programming class, workshops or seminars every week including preparation for practice

Large group teaching: 9 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 20-27 hours each week studying and revising in your own time
