About BA History of Art
Our course places particular emphasis on progression and is notable for providing the opportunity to carry out research in all years. The first year will give you a grounding in the key skills needed for a history of art degree, studying medieval, early modern, modern and contemporary art history. You will also choose a research-oriented, small-group seminar class.
In the following years, you will choose from a variety of broader thematic lecture- and seminar-based units, as well as further research-oriented units. There is also the option to study abroad in the second year. You will undertake one substantial piece of independent research each year, and write a dissertation in your final year.
A wide range of subject matter is available for study. Current units include:
Arts of War and Peace
Modern Art in Britain
Art, Music and Modernism
Modern German Art
19th-century Realism
Soviet Art and Culture
Medieval Tuscany
Western Sculpture and the Classical Tradition
Into the Baroque: Art in the Aftermath of the Reformation
Approaches to Cubism
The Art of Memory
