From the study of pre-modern Japanese literature and history, to contemporary cinema and TV, we are the home to the largest concentration of Japanese specialists in Europe. The BA Japanese Studies programme provides students with the opportunity to study Japanese society, history and culture in depth, along with the study of the language. You will have the opportunity to take approved modules from other SOAS departments, such as Art & Archaeology, Religions, Anthropology, Economics, etc, allowing you to structure your programme of study with great flexibility and to develop and pursue your own individual interests.

Course programme

Students take 120 credits per year composed of core and optional modules, which allows for students to design their own intellectual journey while maintaining a strong grasp of the fundamentals.

This is a three-year degree and requires less intensive study of the Japanese language than the BA Japanese degree. Language modules can be taken at various levels of proficiency from pure beginner to very advanced.

The degree provides wide-ranging coverage of modules taught by specialists in the Japan section and other SOAS departments including: pre-modern and modern literature, applied linguistics, history, religion, media studies and popular culture.

In the final year, you will write an Independent Study Project based on in-depth research in one of many possible fields.

Year 1Core Module

Core modules must be passed in order to progress to the following year of study

  • Japanese Cultural History to 1600: Power, Belief, Creativity
  • Japanese Cultural History 1600 to 1945: Power, Belief, Creativity
Core Language Module

30 credits of Japanese language at the appropriate level from List A.

Optional Module

Choose 30 credits from List B.

Optional Module

Choose 30 credits from List B, or an approved open option (i.e. a module in a subject other than those named in the student’s chosen degree title). Students may not choose a language open option during their first year. Here is a list of non-language open options.

Year 2Core Module

Core modules must be passed in order to progress to the following year of study

  • Nation and Identity in Contemporary Japan
  • Gender and Society in Contemporary Japan

NB: Issues in Post-War Japanese Society 1 & 2 have changed their module titles to Nation and Identity in Contemporary Japan (Issues 1) and Gender and Society in Contemporary Japan (Issues 2). If you already took Issues 1 and 2 in 2017/18, for your core courses for 2018/19 you should choose Cool Japan: Manga, Anime, Sushi (term 1) and Survey of Pre-modern Japanese Literature in Translation (term 2). If you took just Issues 1, then please select Gender and Society in Contemporary Japan and Cool Japan: Manga, Anime, Sushi.If you took just Issues 2, then please select Nation and Identity in Contemporary Japan and Survey of Pre-modern Japanese Literature in Translation.

Choose 30 credits from List A and 30 credits from List B.

Open Option
