Audiology is the branch of Science that studies hearing, balance and the pathological conditions that can affect these sensory organs. Students choosing the Certificate of Higher Education in Basic Audiology will train to become an assistant/associate practitioner in Audiology.
Students will learn how to assess hearing capacity and the clinical nature of the course will provide the practical skills needed for employment in the profession. The work involves treating, monitoring and preventing disorders of the auditory system. A large part of this involves the assessment of hearing capacity of adult patients re-accessing the audiology service, followed by rehabilitation of impairment. This is largely achieved by fitting, verification and adjustment of hearing aids and then training patients on how to use the hearing aids effectively.
The audiology profession has recently undergone rapid expansion, due in part to recent government initiatives that have brought about changes in the provision of audiology services.
