This course is for those who want to feel more confident, knowledgeable and skilful in their internet use either for personal or work use. You will learn essential jargon and terminology - url, hyperlink, modem, router, ethernet, search engines, extensions, plug-ins – and use this knowledge to help you use the Internet more efficiently and securely. You will learn how to set up an internet connection – for example, how to configure your router, what makes a good internet provider, what different types of service are available. We will practise using different search engines, understanding and using their results and learning the best ways and words to use for searches. You will learn how to organise your searches, using bookmarks, tabs and the navigation bar. We will look at some popular and useful webpages and sites and learn where to go to access the news, TV programmes, listen to the radio or music from around the world, watch films, and buy on-line. We will practise downloading, uploading. and copying material. And you will learn how to do all this and maintain your security, understanding your privacy status, and remaining lawful.

• use the internet confidently, safely and skilfully for work and person life• understand and use essential jargon and terminology - url, hyperlink, modem, router, ethernet, search engines, extensions, plug-ins – to surf the internet more efficiently and securely• explain how set up an internet connection including configure a router, assess what makes a good internet provider and identify the types of service are available and which is best for you• use different search engines, assess their merits, evaluate and use their results and use appropriate word combinations and other strategies for the best results• organise your searches, using bookmarks, tabs and the navigation bar effectively• change the settings of common search engines to meet your needs• access popular and useful webpages and sites including Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, Wikipedia, eBay, gov.ac.uk to be able to access the news, TV, radio or music from around the world, watch films, and buy on-line• download, upload and copy material• maintain your security, assess your privacy status and remain lawful.

Please bring a folder, pens and paper. There are no additional costs.

This will be a practical hands-on course. Each student has their own computer and you will be encouraged to practise as much as possible. An interactive whiteboard will help make demonstrations easy to understand. It will be a relaxed learning environment and step by step learning will help you become more skilled. You will have lots of opportunities to ask questions and address areas you need help in.
