This course is for those who lack confidence in their use of a PC/laptop and the Internet whether you are just starting or have been doing so for while but don’t feel able to make the most of them. You will learn essential jargon and terminology - byte, operating system, ram, drive, url, hyperlink, router, search engines, extensions, plug-ins - and use this knowledge to operate your computer and search the Internet more efficiently. You will learn the key elements of your computer, the different settings and where and how to change them. You will practise using free applications on your computer and learn about different types of files, what the endings mean (.doc, .tif, etc.), how to save, store and find them, share them, copy them, recover lost ones. Very importantly, we will focus on how to keep your files and other information safe and maintain cyber security. You will learn about setting up an internet connection. You will practise using different search engines, understanding and using their results and learning the best ways and words to use for searches. You will learn how to organise your searches, using bookmarks, tabs and the navigation bar. We will look at some popular and useful webpages and sites and learn where to go to access the news, TV programmes, listen to the radio or music from around the world, watch films, and buy on-line. And you will learn how to do all this and maintain your security, understanding your privacy status, and remaining lawful.
