Course programme

At a recent Bamboozle residency we worked with a group of students from a Pupil Referral Unit [PRU]. At one point in the drama one of the students said "I ani't f***in' doing it". And it did not look as if he was going to either - he gave all the appearances of meaning exactly what he said!! I then asked him a question. And he sat up immediately and joined in. His teachers were amazed and I was pretty surprised too, despite knowing the power of what we call the Magic Question. This magic question is one of the language strategies that we will be looking at during this one day course. The course is all about what we can say that will get our students to listen to us.

As a member of staff in a Special School, or someone working with SEN in mainstream, I imagine that you, like me, realise that what we say has a huge impact on how our students respond to us. This is true of students whether they are from a PRU, have Severe Learning Difficulties, ADHD, Autism, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties or any other one of the challenging behaviours.

What you will learn on the course:
•a simple and effective way to build a deep level of rapport instantly - when we are in rapport with our students we massively increase the chance of them doing what we ask
•a great way to maintain control in almost any situation
•a key way to empower young people so that they feel in control of what we are asking them to do
•the first thing we need to do if we want students to listen to us
•how to find out what motivates an individual student to co-operate
•how to tell whether a student responds better to the promise of a reward or the threat of a sanction
•the importance of the geography of the room
•how the position we take up in relation to that of our students influences their behaviour
•how to enhance teacher/student relationships
•the magic question that you can use to gain co-operation
•10 top language tips to gain attention and maintain interest
