The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering with foundation year at the University of Bolton has been awarded professional accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and uses UK-SPEC learning outcomes designed to meet in part the academic requirements leading to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

The foundation year is the first year of this degree, offering an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of engineering, science and mathematics. It’s designed to prepare you for degree level study.

Throughout the course, you’ll be supported to develop management, organisation and employability skills alongside your subject-specific knowledge and understanding. Your studies will focus on particular areas of engineering such as mechanical design, systems engineering, analysis of materials and structures, and the theory and application of finite element analysis.

The department provides a friendly, yet challenging, environment where the emphasis is on both the theories and principles of mechanical engineering and their application in a work context. You’ll carry out case studies, practical and laboratory work and problem-solving projects. You’ll also develop the presentation and managerial skills that you will use to manage engineering projects and support your future employment in the industry.

Teaching, Learning And Assessment

The varied nature of the Mechanical Engineering with foundation year programme means that teaching and learning is done in a range of ways, with more open-ended personal study as you progress. In order to ensure the acquisition and development of appropriate concepts, knowledge and skills, you’ll attend some formal timetabled classes. Other teaching methods, which are demanded by professional body accreditation requirements, will be experienced through opportunities to develop creativity and innovative skills, predominantly through project, design and make and test activity, where application, assimilation and integration of course material are realised.

The assessment strategy for the programme is designed to ensure that the overall aims and learning outcomes of the programme are assessed and achieved. To accomplish this, a range of assessment methods are used and are applied depending upon the learning outcome in question and the type of module content being assessed. You’ll receive feedback after each assessment so you know what you have done well, and what you need to improve.
