This course runs in 2016/17.

This course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills relevant to the study of human biology and applies rigorous scientific techniques to the forensic investigation of a range of criminal offences. This can help prepare you for a career in a variety of biology and forensic roles.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This course could lead you into a lifelong fascination with human biology and the scientific investigation of crime. You will learn all about human physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology/genetics, microbiology and how each of these disciplines can be applied in forensic science.

• an applied “Crime Scene to Court” approach which really helps you to understand forensics and the need to methodically collect samples, analyse them and present the results to the standard required by the courts.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Throughout the duration of your course, you will cover key study and research skills and, in addition, you will study forensic science, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology and human physiology.

This is a varied and very applied course, which aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to enter a wide range of graduate careers, as well as postgraduate studies. Laboratory work is a substantial component of the course, enabling you to learn a wide range of techniques in modern, well-equipped laboratories and help you to develop the key experimental, data handling and reporting skills required in forensic and biological careers.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Our modules are based on lectures, with associated laboratory/practical classes, workshop activities and personal tutorials. You will also be supported throughout your studies by web accessible online resources.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 15%; coursework, tests, essays 45%; practical or project work 25%; group work, etc.5%; presentations, posters etc.10%. TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 18 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 6 hours of workshop/online tutorials each week

Medium group teaching: 6 hours of workshops or seminars

Large group teaching: 6 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 18 hours each week studying and revising in your own time
