You should have an interest in the study of living organisms, enjoy carrying out investigations in the laboratory or as fieldwork and be interested in the developments occuring in biology, such as genetic engineering and its impact on society. You will also need good written English and the ability to read questions carefully and intepret them precisely.

Content / Overview:
Biologists are some of the most versatile and employable graduates in the country. Modern biology is developing at an enormous rate, providing us with the potential to cure diseases and repair our bodies, but also creating new dilemmas for our society. Understanding biology is essential to making informed decisions about our future.The AS course looks at cells as the building blocks of life, the chemicals they are built from and how the cell's needs are supplied; evolution; the variety of living things; conservation; diet, food production and health. The A2 course looks at how living things are controlled, how we can change them through biotechnologies, how they get their energy and how we can manage our environment sustainably.
Delivery Method:
A range of methods including problem-solving activities, lectures, group work, practicals (both short and extended) and written exercises.
Assessment:
80% written exams; 20% practical assessment in lessons.
Progression:
Degrees or careers in dentistry, forensics, environmental science, marine biology, medicine, pharmacology, psychology, research or veterinary science.
