Description
The first recorded donation dates Farnham Grammar School to some time before 1585. It is thought that the original school may have had links with Farnham Castle and the Bishops of Winchester dating back to 1351, although this is not documented. In 1905 the town centre site was sold and land purchased at Morley Road to build a new school with playing fields. Farnham Grammar School for Boys was established on the site in Morley Road in 1906 under a charitable Trust, Farnham Grammar School Foundation Trust. Morley Court, the original building of the School, was first opened in 1906.During the period 1585 to 1973 Farnham Grammar School educated several thousand boys from the town of Farnham and the surrounding villages. In later years many boys from other towns including Guildford, Woking and Godalming also attended this school. In 1973 Farnham Grammar School merged with Farnham Girls' Grammar School to form a co-educational Sixth Form College called Farnham College. The new College retained voluntary controlled status and the Trust re-designated as Farnham College Foundation. In 2007 Farnham College merged with Guildford College of Further and Higher Education and all assets and liabilities of Farnham College passed to Guildford College. The Trust re-designated as Farnham Educational Foundation and continues to own most of the land and buildings at the Morley Road site, which are leased to Guildford College. The Foundation continues to take a keen interest in student success at Farnham College, makes awards to students and contributes to enriching the life of students at the College, but the operational and strategic management of the College is provided by the Principal, Executive Team and Corporation of Guildford College. One former governor of Farnham College joined the Corporation of Guildford College to provide continuity.Since the merger the College has invested in facilities at Farnham and worked hard to ensure that students continue to have a good learning experience in both academic and vocational areas. Enrolments have increased and the prospects for Farnham College are good.Guildford College is an independent Corporation with exempt charity status formed under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 and has campuses at Stoke Park in Guildford and Merrist Wood. Details of Corporate Governance arrangements can be found on the Guildford College website| .
