Course Content
AS Unit F211; Cells,exchange and transport
This unit studies living organisms at cell level and progresses to look at transport systems and gas exchange in plants and animals.
AS Unit F212; Molecules, Biodiversity, food and health
This unit looks at the complex molecules found in living organisms and the range from bacteria up to mammals and larger plants. Lastly the unit links the human diet and our influence over our food products.
AS Unit F213; Practical skills in Biology
Internally assessed practical
A2 Unit F214; Communication, Homeostasis and energy
This unit covers the nervous system, hormone system, the kidneys and the liver and their roles in regulating the body;s internal conditions. The two important processes of respiration and photosynthesis are also covered in this unit.
A2 Unit F215; Control, genomes and environment
The unit studies DNA structure and how its genetic code controls the cells activities through protein synthesis. It looks at the processes of meiosis and mutation and their contribution to evolution including artificial selection by man; the application of genetics such as cloning, use of microbes for producing products in the biotechnological industry and genetic fingerprinting; basic ecology includes the effect of man on his environment; and control systems in plants and animals
