About this course

As a BSc (Hons) Biomedical Health graduate, you’ll be equipped with skills which put you at the forefront of advances in medical health. You’ll be well prepared for careers in medical research, health charities, medical and biotechnology industries and the government health sector. Your knowledge will also be invaluable in areas such as analytical consultancy, biological sales and scientific writing.

What you will study

You'll study modules such as:

Stage one

Induction Module - How to orientate yourself quickly into university life, and to navigate the on-line features associated with your programme

Anatomy and Physiology - You will explore the relationship between structure and function in the human body

Chemistry of Life - You will be introduced to the basic concepts of chemistry and the fundamental processes of biochemistry

Genetics - You will gain a broad introduction to, and basic understanding of, the key concepts in classical and molecular genetics

Introduction to Biological and Developmental Psychology - Learn how the brain works and explore concepts relevant to the study of child development

Practical Methods in Medical Bioscience - Introduction to medical research methodology including cellular pathology, clinical microbiology and clinical biochemistry

Concepts of Health and Wellbeing - Learn practical skills in diagnosing health conditions and the basics of public health

Stage two

Biomedical Professional Practice - Develop skills used by NHS diagnostic scientists, including Virology, Microbiology, Genetic testing, Histpathology, Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology

Independent Research and Professional Development - You will learn about instigating and conducting research, and develop your career planning for life after university

Human Physiology and Disease - You will develop a broad-based understanding of human diseases within the context of the normal physiological mechanisms

The Cell - You'll develop an understanding of eukaryote cell structure and function, and learn about current advances in topics such as stem cells and cancer

Molecular Biology - You'll develop an understanding of the molecular basis of fundamental biological processes, such as transcription and translation

Human Reproduction - You will cover a range of topics in the field of human reproduction, including developmental genetics, infertility, pregnancy and childbirth

Microbiology - You will learn about microbial structure and function, and how this relates to the harmful and beneficial effects of microbes

Health of Global Populations - You will develop and understanding of the wider determinants of Health and the impact that these can have on human populations

Nutrition for Public Health - The overall aim of this module is to describe and evaluate the links between dietary intake, nutritional policy and the health of individuals and populations across the lifespan

Industrial Placement Year (optional)

This course offers an ‘Industrial Placement Year’ giving you the opportunity to enhance your practical skills by putting theory into practice, network in your industry and stand-out in the graduate job market. The placement year takes place in your third year, once completed, you would return to University to complete your final year of studies.

Stage three

Independent Studies in Bioscience - You will undertake an independent piece of work of your choosing (subject to approval)

Optional modules:

The Human Genome - You will develop your understanding of the molecular evolution of DNA sequences, bioinformatics and genomics

Oncology and Immunology - Explore the causes of cancer, how it is treated and what directions are currently being undertaken by cancer research scientists. Develop an understanding of medical immunology, including autoimmune disease

Cell Signalling in Health and Disease - This module focuses on the regulatory mechanisms behind the cellular response to a variety of external signalsVocational Module - The student has freedom to select an appropriate host organisation to undertake a placement within a company, voluntary body or public establishment

Science Communication - Explores the spectrum of delivery methods of scientific information in modern society including newspapers, museums, TV and the internet

Society and Human Health - This module will require students to examine a selection of key human health issues that are currently a challenge to the health care system

Applied Biosciences - The module will have a number of subtopics from which students will choose a number to study in more detail i.e Molecular Techniques, Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Quality assurance and Data Handling

International Public Health Nutrition - This module aims to investigate how diet as a modifiable risk factor can affect the risk for chronic diseases, and how this relationship can affect public health policy across different population groups at a global level
