Course programme

Black and White Photography

This course will teach you about the Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera and how to control it manually. You will also learn how to develop B&W film and printing techniques, and you will have the opportunity to develop a project from a given theme.

Course content (Please note: this course is not digital)

Level One:
This course will teach you about the Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera and how to control it manually. You will also learn how to develop B&W film and printing techniques, and you will have the opportunity to develop a project from a given theme. There will be a different theme each ten week course which will develop your understanding of using the camera as a creative tool and not just about the technical side, but a much more experimental and fun way of learning about this versatile subject.

Course one: Photographing People

After having your introduction on how to take pictures using a SLR camera and how to develop and print your photos, you will learn how to use the studio and take pictures on the given theme. You will look at composition, lighting, effects and develop an interesting collection of photos.

Course two: Still Life

If you are a continuing student, you will get stuck in the studio developing ideas on the given theme. If you are a new student, you will be taken through a technical introduction and join in with the project part way through the course. This term will mainly be spent in the studio photographing objects, using unique lighting methods and working with other students to develop your individual creative response to the theme of still life.

Course three: Cityscapes

Taking the course to the outdoors, you will learn techniques associated with photography the city, develop your own creative response top the theme whilst learning about composition and how to take great photographs.

Teaching

Sessions are based around discussion, demonstrations of techniques and practical work where you will work on your own and with others.

Equipment and materials costs

Introductory materials are included in the course fees but you will have to pay for film and paper after the first introductory sessions; these can be purchased from the College at cost price.
