About this course
Students should have at least 3 GCSE's at grade D or above and demonstrate a positive attitude to learning and developing themselves within the marine industry.
Students currently studying at college must have achieved either a PEO level 1 or level 2 in a marine / engineering based subject.
For mature students, entry criteria will be discussed on an individual basis.

Boat Building C&G Certificate Level 2
About the course:
This qualification is appropriate for anyone who is, or wants to be employed in the boatbuilding industry.
This certificate can be taken as part of an apprenticeship for the industry.
Course Content:
Mandatory units are:
- Developing Self & Working Safely in a Marine Environment - This unit is concerned with safety awareness and communication skills needed to work effectively in the marine industry. It covers health and safety, interaction with other employees and an understanding of the terminology and structure of the industry.
- Marine Technology - This unit is concerned with selection and use of materials, tools and equipment and their application in boat production maintenance and support.
The two recommended units for the Boat Building pathway are:
- Yacht and Boat Building Assembly and Sub-Assembly - This unit covers the skills and knowledge associated with the building of boats and associated components. The content includes interpreting specifications, preparation, assembly and quality control.
- Composites for Marine Construction - This unit concerns the requirements for successful production of components in composite materials related to marine construction. It includes wet lay ups, use of pre-preg materials, interpretation of drawings, specifications, planning moulding and lay ups. It also covers operations required to produce components and safe working practices to complete composite construction.
Equipment Requirements:
All equipment will be provided by the college. Students will however need to provide their own work-boots and overalls.
Assessment:
The assessment for this course is a mixture of online tests, practical and written assignments.
Progression:
Students may progress on to the City & Guilds level 3 certificate in Marine Engineering or a BTEC National Diploma in Marine Design at City College.
