About the course
Boatbuilders build boats such as yachts, workboats and superyachts and/or refit and repair existing boats. Boats may be made of composites, metals or wood so a boatbuilder can work with and understand the capabilities of a variety of materials. They can read and interpret engineering and technical drawings to produce moulds, jigs, plugs and templates to create complex shapes using a variety of measuring equipment, machines and hand tools. They manufacture and assemble components that form the structure of a boat as well as the interior and exterior fit out.
On this course, you will be expected to work both individually and as part of a team. You will understand and comply with organisational and statutory safety including sustainability requirements and can work with minimum supervision. You will also be responsible for the quality and accuracy of your work and you will become a good communicator and problem solver.
Boatbuilders typically work with associated trades such as marine engineering and have a strong understanding of the marine industry. Upon successful completion of their apprenticeship, the individual will be multi-skilled and thus capable of adapting to changing demands as boats become more complex, and new materials and methods are introduced.

Entry requirements
Acceptance on these Apprenticeships is via Initial Assessment and the most suitable Apprenticeship route will be discussed with the employer.
For the Apprenticeship Level 3 Boatbuilder Standard, candidates will need GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*-C in maths, English, a science, and technology. An apprentice without level 2 English and maths on entry, must achieve this level before taking the end-point assessment.

What you'll learn
The Intermediate Apprenticeship Framework will include:
- Level 2 NVQ Diploma – completed at work with the help of a College assessor
- Level 2 Technical Diploma – completed at work with various tutors
- Functional Skills for maths, English and ICT level 1 or (Subject to GCSE grades) working towards Level 2 Maths and English – completed at College
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) – Independent enquiry, creative thinking, reflective thinking, team working, self-management and effective participation – completed at work alongside the NVQ
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) – completed at work and at College
The Advanced Apprenticeship Framework will include:
- NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Marine Engineering
- functional skills maths and English ICT at Level 2
- ERR – Employee Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) – independent enquiry, creative thinking, reflective thinking, team working, self-management and effective participation
- Apprenticeship Standard – Boatbuilder Level 3
