This course charts the history of British and Irish art music from the early twentieth century to the present day. We will consider several key musical relationships between the two countries and also explore their idiosyncracies. Tutor:Edward Henderson [external website].

About this course

- Chart the history of British and Irish classical music from the 1900s to the present day.
- Display a broad understanding of the musical trajectories listed above
- Feel confident undertaking further reading and listening of related works
- Be able to critically engage with music journalism in this field (e.g. concert reviews, composer biographies).

Please bring a notebook and pen.
You may wish to buy some of the music or books recommended in class.

- Britten: a survey of several key works
- Modernism and the Manchester School : Birtwistle
- Contemporary grand opera: George Benjamin and Thomas Adès
- Post-Minimalism: Andrew Hamilton and Gerald Barry
- The Irish Avant Garde: Jennifer Walshe.

The classes will be a mixture of lecturing, listening to music and discussion. Wider reading and research will be suggested but there will not be any compulsory ‘homework’. It is hoped that you will be interested to read a little about these works between classes.
