Course programme

You will use the latest specialised studio production facilities, featuring a full range of Solid State Logic Technology: 48 Channel SSL Duality Console, SSL AWS948, and the SSL Matrix. Each individual workstation also includes an SSL Nucleus and Pro Tools and Logic Pro software.

You will learn from a course team of professionals with extensive experience in studio and music production, sound engineering, music and sound for film and multimedia, live and session instrument performance, and musicology. In addition, you will benefit from masterclasses from visiting practitioners, visits to recording studios and record companies, seminars and music events.

Offering lots of support, this course will enable you to develop into a flexible, creative and reflective learner with a range of tangible and transferrable skills, essential to your progression onto university or into employment.

1st Year: Develop core technical skills in the use of key SSL technology: Nucleus, Matrix and AWS948; Explore techniques in a variety of contexts, including games and film sound production and music recording; Develop skills in listening, research and analysis of music and production.

2nd Year: Master the independent use of the SSL Duality studio throughout the production process: Recording, Mixing, Mastering; Extend your technical and creative skills through a major public project; Extend your skills in musicological analysis and evaluation.

You need 200 UCAS points from one, or a combination of the following:

  • A Levels in related subjects at Grade C
  • BTEC National or Extended Diploma at MMP
  • BTEC Level 3 National Certificate or Diploma at DM
  • Access to Higher Education qualification (subject related) at Pass

In addition:

  • Portfolio of relevant work
  • 4 GCSEs at Grade C including Maths and English
  • Students for which English is a second language are required to pass the IELTS test achieving a minimum of level 5.5.

Functional Skills Maths and English at Level 2 or Key Skills Application of Number and Communication at Level 2 will be accepted in place of GCSE Maths and English.

Applicants who do not meet these entry requirements will be considered based on equivalent qualifications, previous experience, a College assessment, applicant interview and a portfolio of relevant work.

Overseas qualifications will be assessed on a case by case basis.


Set within a professional recording studio and sound production environment, you will work on projects and industry briefs that reflect working practice in the commercial world. Assignments are modelled on activities and processes found in industry. You will be assessed through coursework, project work and written assignments.

On successful completion of the course, you will get a Higher National Diploma in Music Production. You can then apply to further courses at UK universities or find employment in the sector in roles such as Sound Engineer, Music Producer, Composer, Games Sound Designer, Sound Designer for Film, Sound Recordist, Mix Engineer, and Mastering Engineer.
