Brief Description of the Course:

The course prepares students towards BHS examinations covering the syllabus and examination technique. Students enrol for 1 year and depending on the individual can move through the stages at their own pace. Students will benefit from the course by furthering their knowledge and experience with a range of horses that otherwise they would not receive. There is also the opportunity to take BHS Ride and Road Safety examinations.

Entry Criteria:

Course places are based on an interview and a riding assessment which is the basic requirement for Stage I. Direct entry on to Stages II and III requires certification of the previous qualifications.

This course provides valuable experience and technical expertise towards taking BHS stages examinations and/or furthers student's knowledge of the horse. The BHS qualifications have a long, proven recognition within the horse industry. Possible careers/jobs include:

Progression:

This part-time course could be used as a stepping stone on to the full-time courses at Myerscough. Students can develop valuable experience with horses, furthering their knowledge to meet the relevant entry requirements.

Special Requirements:

1 Timetables and duties Each stage has its own timetable of stable management, theory, riding, table management practical and skills practical. Students are expected to tack and untack their own horse for riding and general care and attention for the horse after exercise.

2 Equipment and/or clothing Grooming kit in a suitable container including dandy brush, body brush, hoof pick, curry comb, mane comb, sponges, cloth/stable rubber and plaiting equipment. Muckers, jodhpurs, boots/riding boots/wellingtons/strong boots. Riding - schooling and jumping whip Minimum age Students are normally 16 years old and upwards.

3 Hidden costs Equipment and clothing must be obtained before commencing the course. Stationery is required and is available from the College shop. Students who wish to take BHS examinations must fund these themselves as with the BHS membership. The costs at present are as follows: BHS membership (yearly) - £40.00 plus £5.00 Joining Fee

4 Examination fees Information about Examination Fees is available on BLOOM, which can be accessed after acceptance of an application.
