Is the development of the EU an example of the most ambitious and far-reaching international cooperation in the world? How have Europe 's major countries worked together in foreign and defence policy and have they succeeded in developing a Common Foreign and Security Policy for the EU? How can the countries of Central and Eastern Europe deal with the legacies of Communism, and build new relationships in the European community? Set against a general understanding of the major issues, approaches and debates in International Politics this degree scheme develops specific expertise in areas of European politics. The BSc Econ European Politics degree scheme looks beyond the role of the nation-states, and examines the attempts by many non-state nations and regions to develop political autonomy. It also examines the Changing Politics of the UK : how devolution inside the UK , and European integration and globalisation outside it, are shaping politics and life for people in the UK .

Degree Structure

Year One

During their first year (known as ‘Part One') students are introduced to the study of International Politics and to some of the major areas of the discipline.

Single Honours students are encouraged to take all six of these modules, but it is possible to take some modules from other Departments if you prefer.

Years Two and Three (Part 2)

During their either their second or third year students are required to take the core module for their degree scheme.

In their final year students are required to complete a 12,000-word dissertation on a topic related to their chosen degree scheme.

In addition to these core elements, Single Honours students take up to nine optional modules from the Department of International Politics over years two and three. The range of options on offer changes from year to year.
