This module will introduce students to functional and applied anatomy, palpation of key structures and methods of analysing movement, with specific focus on the lower and upper limbs. Students will also be introduced to underpinning anthropometric measurements and principles of biomechanics in relation to movement, anatomical structures and biomechanical measurement. Movement and rehabilitation techniques and assessment of balance and posture in relation to non-clinical and clinical conditions will also be explored. Along with an introduction to simple exercises for lower and upper limbs.

This module will allow students to build on their knowledge and application of the palpation of key structures, functional anatomy and methods of analysing movement with specific focus on the head, neck and trunk. The anatomical and biomechanical principles from semester one will also be developed through the analysis of whole body movement, including advanced clinical gait analysis. The importance of back care and prevention of back injury, the principles of ergonomics, task analysis and application to injury prevention in the workplace will be covered. Principles underpinning exercise prescription to improve functional movement and the mechanical effects of exercise on bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments will also be explored to inform exercise prescription. To support safe practice students will be introduced to current health and safety legislation and risk assessment preparation. Familiarisation of the general principles of moving and handling of patients will be undertaken, in preparation for completion of a practical course in moving and handling techniques.

The module will facilitate critical reflection on professional and interpersonal communication and facilitate development of skills in self- management, self-presentation, respectful communication, working with diverse others and taking responsibility for fitness to practise. The module will draw on the disciplines of psychology and sociology to explore the impact of life experiences on health, wellbeing, how these may shape attitudes, beliefs and behaviours and influence communication. Significant health transitions will be examined to explore their implications for health and well-being and used to consider how the professional may adapt their communication to work effectively in teams and deliver person centred practice safely and effectively within the legal and ethical obligations of the professional role of a physiotherapist. The processes by which people grow, adapt and cope with transitions and life events will be used to help develop an understanding of communication theories and skills in their application as therapeutic tools. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own trajectory of development to illuminate the individual impact of culture, equality and diversity and to apply this understanding to becoming an autonomous professional, exercising professional judgement and delivering non-discriminatory practice.

This module aims to provide a foundation understanding of the organisation and physiological function of the human body in relation to the immune system, bone and joint structure and the cardiorespiratory system, and to explain how these mechanisms are modified from healthy to disease states. This understanding is applied to the practical application of associated basic physiotherapy assessment and treatment techniques. Drawing on learning from other year 1 modules, practical simulation activities will assist you to develop a basic understanding of physiotherapy assessment and treatment techniques enabling a sensitive, person-centred assessment to be carried out and documented. You will also be guided to develop the skills of initial diagnosis, at a basic level, on the basis of an assessment and an analysis of the information collected.
