About BSc Veterinary Nursing and Bioveterinary Science
The first two years of your studies are completed at the main Clifton campus, where our pre-clinical facilities are based, with some days spent at the Bristol Veterinary School at Langford.
In year one you will be taught the fundamental concepts of anatomical science, understanding body function and pre-clinical science, and will be introduced to the principles and practice of veterinary nursing and bioveterinary science.
The second year builds up the basic sciences through classroom-based study comprising of a compulsory unit in veterinary anatomy plus a choice of two optional units. You will also study anaesthesia and fluid therapy; surgical nursing and theatre practice; and medical nursing, diagnostics and therapeutics.
Your third year comprises a 42-week placement in first-opinion veterinary practice within a 50-mile radius of Bristol Veterinary School. You will complete an electronic portfolio of practical tasks during your placement and will study professional veterinary nursing practice through lectures and online tutorials.
In your final year you will study units in applied clinical veterinary nursing. You will also complete a ten-week research project on a topic of your choice, undertaking individual, in-depth exploration of an aspect of veterinary nursing or bioveterinary science.
Taught units are assessed using a variety of written examinations, computer-based tests and written reports, as well as practical examinations. While you are working within the clinical environment, your progress is monitored through practical competence assessments.
The course is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
