Course programme

Overview of the course:

This is a one year course that focuses on introducing you to the various aspects of sport and active leisure, including fitness testing and programming, the human body, sports training, organising events, leading activities, etc. It is also designed to encourage you to develop the personal skills and qualities you need to work in the sport, leisure or outdoor education industries. It is intended to be a practical hands-on programme for those students who prefer this type of learning compared to the rigours of academic study.

As part of your study programme you will also be required to attend Maths and English lessons if you have not already achieved a Grade C or above in these subjects. Your timetable will consist of 12 hours contact time, which includes an hour of tutorial with your Progression Coach.
Finally, you will be expected to complete a minimum of 72 hours work experience within the field of Sport or Active Leisure.

Topics:

The course is quite practical in nature but also focuses on the theory behind sport and exercise. Therefore, lessons will incorporate both practical sessions, such as fitness testing and programming, as well as classroom based lessons. Other topics include How the Body Works, Assisting at a Sports Event, and Improving Own Fitness.
