Brief Description of the Course:

This course provides students with a basic introduction to motorsports. It is extremely popular with school leavers who wish to combine practical based training with sound theoretical knowledge. The course is designed to give you a broad overview of the industry, with a view to progressing to one of our Level 3 courses or to start work in the industry. You will begin to learn the various workshop practices that are required in the preparation and inspection of motorsport vehicles before, during and after motorsport events.

You will also gain an introduction to motor mechanics: from routine maintenance, fault diagnosis and safe working practices to electrics, transmissions, engines, brakes, suspension and body systems.

Entry Criteria:

This course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following qualifications are needed:

¨ a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade D or above to include English Language

¨ or equivalent qualifications

List of Modules:

¨ Essential Working Practices for Vehicle Technology - Safe and effective workshop practice including the use of tools, facilities and materials.

¨ Vehicle Electrical and Electronic Principles - Introduction to electrical and electronic systems.

¨ Engineering Skills for Vehicle Technology - Learning the necessary skills to carry out maintenance and rectification of faults in vehicle systems.

¨ Vehicle Component Removal and Refitting Techniques - Provides necessary skills to use tools and equipment to carry out the removal and refitting of a range of vehicle components and systems.

¨ Vehicle Design and Operation of Vehicle Systems - Focuses on a range of systems and layouts including transmissions, steering, brakes, suspension and body systems.

¨ Vehicle System Fault Diagnosis - Learning of accurate methods of fault finding and choice of effective remedial action.

¨ Function and Operation of Vehicle Electrical Systems and Components - Focuses on the main electrical components and systems including vehicle lighting, auxiliary components, batteries, starters and alternators.

¨ Motorsport Vehicle Preparation and Inspection Techniques - Focuses on the technical skills and qualities needed to prepare a vehicle for inspection at a motorsports event.

¨ Stripping and Rebuilding Motorsports Engines - Using specialist tools and equipment to dismantle and remove engine components. Inspection and checking of components and rebuilding to meet motorsports standards and specifications.

Assessments:

Assessments will include assignments and practical work. There are no formal examinations on the Level 2 Diploma.

Progression:

Level 2 students can progress to level 3 programmes subject to published entry requirements and satisfactory performance at level 2.

1 Specialist Clothing and Equipment:

Clean Myerscough Motorsport fire retardant overalls and suitable protective footwear

2 Extra Costs:

Although not essential for the course, students may wish to buy books.

3 Minimum Age

16 years old.
