A satisfactory report from school is essential as you may be working with young children on placement.A successful interview is required before being offered a place on this course.You will need to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure Certificate before attending placement.

What are the Course Details?
This is a vocational qualification, equivalent to up to three A Levels, which offers learners a route into employment or Higher Education. Learners will cover a range of fields including Architecture, Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Land Surveying, Construction Management, Building Surveying, Building Control and Town Planning.

Is the Course for Me?
This is an ideal course for learners who wish to build a career in the construction industry. The course will prepare learners to progress with their studies across a variety of different roles and specialisms depending on where their interest lies and links successfully to a host of construction related careers.

What are the Entry Requirements?
Learners must have at least four GCSE's at Grade C or above which must include English and Maths or an appropriate Intermediate or Level 2 course.

What will I Learn?
In year 1 learners will study six units to achieve the BTEC National Award, equivalent to one A Level. These units include:
  • Health, Safety and Welfare
  • Construction and the Environment
  • Maths in Construction and the Built Environment
  • Construction Technology and Design in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • Surveying in Construction
  • Construction Science and Materials

Learners who successfully achieve the Award can progress to year 2 to convert the Award to the BTEC National Certificate (equivalent to 2 A Levels) or the BTEC National Diploma (equivalent to 3 A Levels). National Certificate learners will study six units and National Diploma learners will study 12 units from the following, as chosen by the course team:
  • Graphical Detailing
  • Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • Setting Out Processes in Construction Civil Engineering
  • Structural Mechanics in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • ICT and CAD in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • Further Maths in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • Public Health in Civil Engineering
  • Highway Construction and Maintenance in Civil Engineering
  • Planning, Organisation and Control of Resourses
  • Measuring, Estimating and Tendering Processes
  • Economics and Finance in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • Spatial Design Techniques in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • Surveying Technology in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • Topographic Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • Structural Mechanics
  • Building Surveying
  • Mechanical and Electrical
  • Building Regulations and Control
  • ICT and Computer-Aided Design
  • Design Procedures

During the course, you will also have the opportunity to study Functional Skills in Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology.

How will I Learn?
This course allows learners to explore areas of architecture, civil engineering and construction not usually covered in traditional A Level courses. The course is delivered via a mix of classroom work, site visits, personal research and learner-centred work (a tutor will always be available to offer guidance and support).
Learners who gain employment in the construction industry at technician level may at any stage transfer onto the National Certificate, studying one day per week.

How will I be Assessed?
Methods of assessment include assignments, case studies, laboratory exercises and coursework, leading to an external assessment in Construction Technology and Design. Learners will also develop a portfolio of evidence.

What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to a wide range of enrichment activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Site visits form a key element of the course and help to develop learners' understanding of the topics being covered.

Is there any Work Experience?
Formal work experience does not form a part of this course however learners who gain employment in the construction industry at technician level may at any stage transfer onto the National Certificate.

What can I Progress to?
This qualification is equivalent to up to three A Levels and can therefore help you to move into Higher Education to study for a degree, HND/HNC or foundation degree.
