Course programme

Course suitability

The Edexcel National Diploma in Photography is a programme of study for students interested in pursuing a photographic career in art, design or the media industries. The course provides an ideal foundation for studies at HND, Foundation Degree or BA level

Information about the course

You will be working in very well equipped studios and darkrooms, and taught by a team of lecturers who are professionally qualified and vocationally experienced. You will gain both practical skills and a strong visual awareness by undertaking a range of integrated assignments that are continuously assessed.

The course includes core units that cover location and studio photography, darkroom techniques and the applications of computers in art and design. The core units are supported by more specialist units, which include experimental imagery and digital imaging. In addition, related professional studies and historical and contextual studies provide a strong backdrop to the practical studies. Practical assignments enable students to develop skills across a wide front, and to recognise the value of these skills in different contexts in pursuit of more complex images. In practical areas assessment takes place every 6 weeks. Written unit work is broken down into two sections, to distribute workload over a term.

Personal photography is also encouraged. Practice has proven to be a significant element in portfolio building and student progression. Visits to galleries and museums will also be arranged. Towards the end of the course the emphasis is on the student’s chosen specialist field which culminates in an Annual Exhibition.

This is a nationally recognised vocational course of studies in photography and digital imaging. Practical work is strongly backed up by related theoretical studies. This combination increases professionalism and awareness of the issues both in the workplace, and for Higher Education courses. Students also develop chosen Key skills in Communication (both written and oral) or IT.
