The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. This may result in changes to the course. If changes to your course are approved, we will inform you.

Learning and Teaching

The team provide a friendly, collaborative environment for learning. Teaching methods vary according to modules. However, most learning is through lectures and tutorials, including computer lab sessions for developing your CAD skills. You will receive hands on experience to gather survey information and use the results to draw up proposals, using the latest Information Technology.

Modules often include guest lectures from RICS professionals and people from the industry who cover topical matters, including cutting edge surveying techniques using IT, heritage issues, asbestos and component manufacturers.

For more details, see our full glossary of learning and teaching terms.

Study time

Lectures, workshops/seminars, group project work, and tutoring account for 12 hours of contact time per week. You will also be expected to spend at least double this time (24 hours) in essential independent study.

Part-time students

This course is available to study on a part-time day release basis. Modules are structured to allow you to attend lectures and tutorial sessions one day per week therefore minimising the time spent away from the work place.

Students generally join the course with an HNC in Construction or equivalent, which means that you are exempted from Level 1 of the course, and can gain the BSc (Hons) degree in three years at UWE Bristol. A large proportion of our part-time students are supported by their employer.

A key benefit of studying part-time means you can put your learning directly into practice, and where possible you can use work-related problems in projects.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a mix of coursework and examinations, all of which aim to assess not only what you know and can do, but also develop graduate attributes valued by employers.

Coursework may include essays, reports, portfolios of drawings or sketches, calculations, lab reports, presentations, projects, studios and, in the final year, a dissertation.

While most coursework involves individual submissions, some modules in each year require teamwork.

For more details see our full glossary of assessment terms.
