COURSE CONTENTS
Introduction And Legislative Requirements
Including: Health & Safety at Work etc. Act (1974), Control Of Asbestos at Work Regulations, Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations (1992), Construction Design & Management Regulations (1994), Workplace
(Health, Safety and Welfare) regulations 1992.
Asbestos In Buildings
Types and uses of asbestos in buildings, Surveys of asbestos containing materials in buildings, Risk assessment of asbestos containing materials in buildings, Management of asbestos containing materials in buildings.
Educational Objectives
The student should be able to describe the uses of asbestos in buildings and the public health risk these might pose. The student should understand the principles of and requirements for:
asbestos surveys, risk assessment and risk management strategies and their role in reducing health risks.
Bulk Sampling
Including: Sampling strategy & methodology, sample frequency, sampling techniques, health, safety and quality procedures.
Educational Objectives:
The student should have a detailed knowledge of the approved methods of sampling of bulk asbestos.
Practical Work And Practical Assessment
Practical work in carrying out building surveys: a mock survey including data collection, material risk assessment and use of asbestos survey and management databases*
A practical assessment carried out by the course provider will include: a photographic assessment for identifying the presence of asbestos in different locations, taking samples, bagging and labelling samples, making safe, use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective Equipment (RPE)
