The event industry has seen significant growth in recent years, and is worth £39.1 billion in the UK alone. This exciting and vocationally-relevant degree brings together UWE Bristol's recognised expertise in event studies, management and tourism, and is primarily for those wishing to specialise in the business of events and events in business.
You will study the main disciplines and operational areas of business alongside specialist modules focusing on management functions, processes and values in events - from inception through to closure and evaluation. You will also explore diverse parts of the industry such as music concerts and festivals, conferences and meetings, sporting events, and weddings and celebrations.
Course content is continually refreshed and connected to the real-world, and is delivered by experienced, research-active professionals in a city region with a national and increasingly international reputation for its events and festivals.
Real-world experience
Our connections with event organisations, management companies, suppliers and venues add value to the degree, bringing opportunities for guest talks, site visits, placements and voluntary work. An optional placement year allows you to build contacts and networks, and every student gets a taste of running an event by collaborating on a 'live', team-based project in their final year.
Where it can take you

Content

In a Foundation year (Year zero) the content is designed to develop your academic skills. It also raises awareness of the relevance law, economics, accounting, plus business and management, will play in your future, professional lives.

You are encouraged to develop as reflective learners and will gain an understanding of the attributes that graduates of UWE Bristol attain, such as being self-reliant, enterprising, future-facing, collaborative and globally responsible citizens.

Much of the scheduled class time will be spent in rooms equipped for technology-supported work in groups.Teaching methods will be engaging as staff use the latest techniques and technologies to enhance the learning experience.

The four modules will have three hours of teaching each week (12 hours of scheduled class time in total). On four occasions during the year, the whole 12 hours will be spent team-working on a joint project. One of the weeks will result in an exhibition of assessed group posters, another will produce individual personal development plans.

The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. This may result in changes to the course. If changes to your course are approved, we will inform you.

Learning and Teaching

As a student on this course, you'll get the opportunity to study thought-provoking and topical modules led by well-connected and research active staff, take part in field trips and site visits designed to reinforce what you've learnt in class and, if you wish, undertake a year-long placement in industry or a study year abroad.

Our teaching and learning approaches are student-focused, with the emphasis on helping you to pro-actively find things out for yourself. You'll be expected to apply theory to practice, so that you can appreciate the relevance, applications and limitations of the concepts you have learnt. The placement or study year abroad can assist with this; there are also other personal development opportunities, for example becoming a Student Ambassador or a PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) Leader, or volunteering.

For more details see our full glossary of learning and teaching terms.

Study time

Independent learning is a key aim. Lectures, seminars and workshops, and tutorials account for 12 hours class contact per week (some of which may be facilitated in an online environment). You are expected to spend at least as much time again undertaking essential reading, preparing for classes, reviewing lecture content, completing written work and revising for end-of-module examinations.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework and examination, designed to test not only what you know but also your ability to evidence graduate attributes that employers are looking for.

Coursework comes in many different forms, including essays and reports, business plans and applied research projects, portfolios and weekly diaries, group and individual presentations, and posters. You will also be required to reflect and comment on your own learning and personal development.
