Course outline

It is a vocational broad based qualification at Level 2 that provides knowledge and understanding of this vocational area. You will examine:

how different parts of business work

what factors influence their decisions and activities

You will study in detail:

finance

sales techniques

how to start your own business

how businesses operate

customer relations

business on-line

If you decide to study for the BTEC First Diploma in Business you will study 3 Core Units and 3 Specialist Vocational Units this is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at A* C.

Students who take this course find it very useful because it gives them an understanding of business and because they enjoy coursework assessment as opposed to exam based assessment.

Entry requirements

At least 4 GCSEs at grade D or above OR a Merit in a Level 1 qualification.

A willingness to collect, organise and interpret information to produce a portfolio of work.

The ability to work independently and to meet deadlines.

How you will learn

Well-qualified, highly experienced and enthusiastic Business Studies tutors will teach you. You will learn through a wide range of learning activities including class discussions, group presentations, business role-play, business visits, work experience, individual research and one-to-one tutorials.

How you will be assessed

All assessment is coursework based . Students produce a portfolio of work that is internally and externally assessed.

The coursework is based on information collected through the research of business organisations. You will study the Specialist Unit Starting up a New Business which is based on developing a business idea. Students are also expected to undertake work experience .

Anyone that has the entry criteria can study for BTEC First Business although most students are aged 16-18.

Other complementary subjects

If you decide to study for the BTEC First Diploma you can also study for an additional GCSE qualification or Level 2 numeracy and literacy.

What you can do after this course

BTEC First Business allows you to progress to BTEC National Business or other advanced level vocational subjects as well as AS Levels. Students could also move to a modern apprenticeship or other employment.
