Business (National Diploma)
NATIONAL DIPLOMA If you are thinking of a career in business then this 12 unit (equivalent to two A levels) vocational qualification is an ideal route either to starting work directly after Long Road or entering higher education to study business or related subjects.

You do not need to have studied GCSE Business to take this National Diploma course. The course involves a great deal of research with practical tasks included as well, and so will improve your ability to carry out a range of business procedures relevant to the workplace.
Is the Business National Diploma for you?
You will enjoy and benefit from the Business Diploma if you:
  • are interested in the business world;
  • like working on computers and word-processing your work;
  • are able to write fluently and like coursework;
  • are willing to do presentations, work in a group, go out on work experiencer and research business via the internet;
  • are interested and enjoy working with numbers to interpret and understand the financial side of business â€" making that all important profit.

Year 12 Course Content
In year 12 you will study six units:
  • Investigating Business: you will gain an understanding of how businesses develop and adapt in a changing economic and business climate.
  • Customer Service: you will develop knowledge, understanding and skills to meet the needs of different types of customers; also an understanding of the customer service policies and standards within businesses.
  • Business Communication: you will develop knowledge and understanding, and demonstrate practical skills, in the use of ICT based and non-ICT based verbal and written communication methods in a business context.
  • Finance for Business: you will demonstrate the ability to interpret summary financial statements and make judgements about business performance. You will gain knowledge of national, European and global financial issues.
  • Marketing for Business: you will develop knowledge, understanding and skills to create a marketing mix for a business product or service. This might involve the development of a new product or service, or the re-launch of an existing one.
  • Recruitment and Selection: you will develop knowledge, understanding and skills of the recruitment procedures and practical recruitment and selection activities carried out by businesses.

Year 13 Course Content
In year 13 you will study:
  • Practical sales skills: you will develop knowledge, understanding and skills of a range of practical sales techniques for providing either a product or a service to a consumer market or industrial market.
  • Skills and the entrepreneur: you will develop knowledge, understanding and skills of the necessary attributes of a successful entrepreneur and the stages involved.
  • E-business: you will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills associated with the development of e-business, from the point of view of a business becoming involved with internet centred e-commerce activities.
  • Working in International Business: this will provide you with a knowledge and understanding of the operation of business organisations and thr strategies employed for business practice in rhe glocal environment and economy.
  • Motivating and developing people: you will develop knowledge, understanding and skills of differing techniques to empower and motivate employees.
  • Practical administration: you will develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of how businesses plan and operate their administration systems.


Work Experience
In year 13, one of your units will be:
  • Work Experience in Business: This unit is based on a 2 week work experience placement which you will carry out in the Autumn term.
  • Two other units, Practical Administration and Motivating and Developing People also use your work experience to complete, so it is integral to this course.


Assessment
All assessment is by coursework. It is internally assessed with external moderation. It is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and achieves UCAS points for university entrance.
