Course programme

Content

In a Year 0 (Foundation Year) the content is designed to develop your academic skills. It also raises awareness of the relevance law, economics, accounting, plus business and management, will play in your future, professional lives.

You are encouraged to develop as reflective learners and will gain an understanding of the attributes that graduates of UWE Bristol attain, such as being self-reliant, enterprising, future-facing, collaborative and globally responsible citizens.

Much of the scheduled class time will be spent in rooms equipped for technology-supported work in groups. Teaching methods will be engaging as staff use the latest techniques and technologies to enhance the learning experience.

The four modules will have three hours of teaching each week (12 hours of scheduled class time in total). On four occasions during the year, the whole 12 hours will be spent team-working on a joint project. One of the weeks will result in an exhibition of assessed group posters, another will produce individual personal development plans.

Year 0 (Foundation Year)

  • Becoming a Professional
  • Introduction to Organisations, Enterprise and Management
  • Economics and Accounting for the Real World
  • Introduction to Law in a Social, Business and Global Context

You will study the Foundation Year alongside students from other business and law courses and so you may transfer to another course in one of these areas at the end of a successful Foundation Year. The normal expectation is that you must pass all Year 0 modules before progressing to Year 1. Students seeking transfer to BSc(Hons) Economics (as distinct from BA(Hons) Economics) would require an A level in Mathematics.

This course is based on 'learning by doing' and the content and structure of the modules reflect this.

Year 1

In the first year you will spend some of your time in formal teaching sessions as you begin to learn and develop the skills you will need to be an effective team entrepreneur and member of your team company. You will develop a good all round grounding in running a business, alongside developing your capacities as a team player with an entrepreneurial mindset. You will take modules in:

  • Building a Company
  • Developing a Company
  • Learning in Teams
  • Management Learning and Development

Year 2

In years two and three, as you gain in experience, you will tend to complete your modules in a more flexible fashion, completing your module coursework as and when appropriate to support the learning from your projects.

  • Growing a Company
  • Working in Teams
  • Authentic Management and Sustainable Practice

Year 3

  • Sustaining a company
  • Team Entrepreneurship
  • Leadership in Practice

The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. This may result in changes to the course. If changes to your course are approved we will inform you.

Learning and Teaching

On this course you will learn by doing real work on real projects, alongside other members of your team company. You will read up on topics such as sales and marketing, leadership and knowledge management as you need to use these skills in your projects so that you develop insight and understanding into how ideas might work in practice.

During the first year there will be professional workshop and 'boot camp' sessions as you explore the basics of setting-up and running your own team company. There are no lectures on this course, though you may choose to attend selected lectures offered on other courses. You will be provided with an extended list of relevant books and journal articles to select from and will be expected to apply the theories and concepts from your reading in running your business and projects.

Instead of taught sessions, you will have regular training sessions with your Team Coaches who will support and guide your team company through the duration of the course. For example, where you need more specialist guidance, your coach will work with you and your team to help you discover a suitable source. You will demonstrate your learning by completing projects and project reports, making presentations and by writing book reviews and reflective essays.

Your learning will be enhanced by giving and receiving feedback, with fellow team entrepreneurs and with your Team Coach. In recognition of this you will complete an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) level 3 certificate in coaching and mentoring during your first year, with opportunities to complete a further ILM qualification later in your degree programme. ILM is one of the most widely recognised professional accreditations for managers.

For more details see our full glossary of learning and teaching terms.

Study time

You will receive eight hours of 'team coaching' per week over 36 weeks of the year and, as a member of your team company, you are expected to attend these sessions. As well as team coaching sessions, you and your team mates will be running your own company and you should expect this course to be a full-time commitment.

Assessment

Assessment is by learning portfolio and written coursework assignments. There are no exams on this course.

The aim of the assessment is that you will demonstrate the knowledge you have acquired from reading and the application of the knowledge through your learning portfolios, which will typically include:

  • pre and post-project reports
  • book reviews
  • activity logs
  • reflections on your learning
  • and reflections on feedback from team coaches and peers.

For more details see our full glossary of assessment terms.
