ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Interview and 5 GCSEs grade C or above in written subjects, one of which must be English. Alternatively, the Certificate in Childcare and Education at Distinction level would be required.
Progression. This is an advanced level course. Achievement at grade "EAA" attracts 360 UCAS points (equivalent to 3 A levels) and direct entry to University.
WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
This course is for those with a genuine interest in children and a desire to be involved with their development and education.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
College classes provide the knowledge and understanding to build confidence and make the best of the very extensive work placements with children aged between birth -15 yrs 11 months.
Units of work studied in the first year are:
An Introduction to Working with Children
Multiple choice question paper
Development from Conception to age 16 years
Supporting Children
Keeping Children Safe
The Principles Underpinning the Role of the Practitioner working with Children
External assessment: short answer test based on a seen case study
Units of work studied in the second year are:
Promoting a Healthy Environment for Children
Play and Learning in Children's Education
Caring for Children
Development of Professional Skills within Children's Education (placement folder)
3 optional units
External assessment: research task
Students should expect to spend a considerable amount of the course in real working environments. These include placements in settings such as Early Years Centres, day nurseries, baby units, preschools, primary schools and middle schools (also high school if a student particularly requests experience within this age group)
It is essential that Childcare and Education Workers have a genuine interest in children. It is an advantage to be patient, reliable, flexible, cheerful, and enthusiastic and in addition have a sense of humour! Candidates should be able to use their own initiative with a commitment to equal opportunities.
HOW WILL I LEARN?
Students will learn through;
Students will be assessed by assignments throughout their Course. Candidates work experience will also be continuously monitored and assessed. There will be three different types of tests held at specific times throughout the Course.
The Key Skills delivered on this Course are Communication and Information Communication Technology.
WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
Progression to further training could include:
Childcare Work (eg nursery supervisor, teaching assistants, nanny, children's nurse)
QTS for Teacher Training
Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies
Relevant HE Degree Courses (nursing, social work etc)
Nursing Training
Potential careers: Teaching assistant, a school special needs worker; assistant in a children's ward, neonatal unit; Camp America or Euro Camp assistant; child minder; Family Centre; Nanny in U.K and abroad; nursery assistant leading to managing a nursery or crche; play leader, private crches; Ski Nanny and Cruise Liner Nanny; working with children through holiday companies. Whilst going on to Higher Education and completing a relevant degree, careers could be developed in the fields of Education, Welfare or Nursing.
