About this course

Students aged 16 to 18 will need 33 GCSE points. Students aged 19 or over should have gained a Merit (M) profile on the CACHE Certificate in Child Care & Education (CCE). All students will be interviewed to assess their eligibility for this course.

Introduction:
This course covers the practical and theoretical aspects of childcare work. 40% of your time will be spent on work placement looking after young children, whilst the remainder of your time will be spent studying a range of units relating to childcare and development.

Study Mode & Location:
This two year Part-Time+ course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
Units include:

  • An Introduction to Working with Children.
  • Development from Conception to age 16 years.
  • Supporting Childcare.
  • Keeping Children Safe.
  • The Principles underpinning the role of the practitioner working with children.
  • Promoting a Healthy Environment for Children.
  • Play and learning in Children`s Education.
  • Caring for Children.
  • Development of professional skills within Children`s Education.


Optional Units Include:

  • Research into childcare, education and development.
  • Nutrition and healthy food for children.
  • Working with babies from birth to 12 months.


You will also have the opportunity to study three key skills in information technology, improve your own learning and application of number at an appropriate level.

Lessons will always be student centred and delivery will include lectures, discussions/debates, group work, role play, presentations, guest speakers, visits, assignments and flexible learning.

You will need to attend a worl placement for 2 days per week, experiencing a range of placements which include nurseries, main stream schools, special schools and hospitals covering the age range 0 to 16 years.

You will additionally have the opportunity to enhance your studies by undertaking additional qualifications and enrichment activities such as:

  • First Aid for Child Care.
  • Drug Awareness.
  • British Sign Language.


Assessment:
Some units will be assessed through assignments and through a portfolio evidence. There will be one short answer paper. During your time on placement you will need to achieve positive reports and complete diaries and tasks demonstrating your practical competence.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course allows progression to a variety of courses and employment opportunities. It is allocated 360 UCAS points (depending on the grade achieved) and therefore allows progression to Higher Education in the field of children`s/general nursing. Employment is available in schools, day nurseries and crèches, or as a qualified nursery nurse.

Previous students have progressed to a range of programmes/careers. These include:

Additional Costs:
There is a resource fee of £210 for this course. This fee will be substantially reduced if you are on income-based benefits and will be completely waived if you are aged 16 to 18. You will also need the following equipment/materials.(Please note, all prices are approximate and will be confirmed at induction.

  • Polo-shirt £10.
  • Sweat-shirt £15.
  • Textbooks £25.


How To Apply
You will need to complete a Further Education Application Form. These will be available from mid-May.
Many courses have limited places so please return your application form as soon as possible. Following acceptance of your application, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.

Part-Time+ Course Benefits
