Copperplate, (Spencerian or English Roundhand, it is know by several names) is enjoying a resurgence of interest of late. Using models, exemplars by your tutor and demonstrations, you will learn the construction and layout of letterforms enabling to you to write more beautifully or more neatley at speed. This workshop will help you to begin the process of this transformation.

About this course

- Draw the copperplate script
- Demonstrate a creative approach to including flourishes in your letterforms
- Select tools and materials appropriate to your personal project
- Write more beautifully or more legibily according to your personal course goals.

Some materials will be provided including cartridge paper, pens, erasers and inks. Please bring the below with you:

Japanese Calligraphy ink stick and ink stone (about 5cm x 10cm size)
Speedball 2968 Oblique pen set, black
0.3 Automatic pencil
A note book to take notes during the course

If you are not sure where to get the tools and materials, please do not buy anything as your tutor will demonstrate
the tools/materials and will suggest where they can be purchased, on the first session.

Course programme

- How to use different pens to complete practical exercises
- Alternative approaches to lettering for greeting cards including decorations such as flowers and plants
- Incorporating decoration into letterforms with florishes using a dip-pen.

You will learn or improve your skills whilst practising the craft and will be encouraged to incorporate your own individuality into your studies and finished pieces. Individual teaching will be by demonstrations and supported by theory and illustration.

Once completed, you could progress to calligraphy course covering a more broad range of scripts such as; VE246 Calligraphy for beginners; VE258 Calligraphy: beautiful writing; VE261 Modern calligraphy; VE265 Traditional Calligraphy: flourished italic Your tutor will be able to advise you during the course.
