Introduction:
This Open College of the North West (OCNW) course provides an introduction to childcare and development and basis for students interested in entering the childcare professions.

Study Mode & Location:
This 16 week part time evening course will last for 3 hours per week. It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
Students study a series of interrelated modules including:

  • The development of the child.
  • The child in the family.
  • Children with special learning requirements.
  • The child in the community.
  • Stress factors in childhood.


These modules will include the following topics:

  • physical development 0-2 years
  • pre-school years
  • learning through play
  • types of family
  • bonding theories
  • the needs of the child
  • the nature of special needs
  • legislation concerning children with special needs
  • children`s rights
  • the role of professionals e.g. nursery nursing
  • child abuse (physical/emotional)
  • poverty
  • homelessness.


Throughout the course, students will gain valuable knowledge in a wide range of related topics, necessary for understanding the principles of child care. This includes the role of legislation, the needs of families and the role of services. It provides adults returning to Further Education with the opportunity to improve their skills and gain confidence before progressing onto more advanced courses of related study.

Assessment:
Assessment is a 3 step process which includes a short piece of work (500 words), an extended piece (1,200 words) and a portfolio of work.

This course will, like all evidence of study, enhance your curriculum vitae and therefore could improve your employment prospects.

The Open College Level 2 Unit in Child Care provides a basis on which you could progress with Grades 4/5 to:

Open College Level 3 course studies, Social Issues in Health Care, Principles of Care, Psychology, CACHE Certificate in Child Care & Education (mature students), BTEC National Diploma/Certificate in Early Years and, BTEC National Diploma in Health Studies.

How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
